Yurko, 13, kicks off rodeo career

CORBIN BRANCH ROAD — Megan Yurko began riding horses competitively three years ago, but is a newbie when it comes to the rodeo. After all, Friday night’s run in the barrel racing event at Dodge Mountaineer Round-Up and World Championship Rodeo at the 4-T Arena was only the second rodeo event in her young career.

But for the 13-year-old from Wheeling, it also provided one of her bigger thrills so far.

It happened not when she first got her horse going to start the race. Or even when Yurko rounded the first barrel. But instead before the event, when the West Virginia kid, among the few in-state competitors taking part, received one of the night’s biggest cheers.

“It’s awesome,” she said. “It’s such a thrill to hear all the fans.”

Added Yurko’s mother, Jennifer: “I think I was more overwhelmed than she was. Everybody was cheering for her.”
