Residents in Mannington might soon be paying an extra $3 in monthly city fees.
During Monday’s meeting, city council members unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance that will increase a municipal service charge. It was the first of two readings needed to pass the ordinance. If the ordinance is approved, the funds generated will be put toward the Clarksburg Street Bridge replacement project.
In October, council passed an ordinance that provides funding for the project through bonds. Ordinance 407, which was read Monday evening, will go toward repaying those bonds.
The ordinance will also amend and readopt an earlier ordinance that provided the imposition and collection of a municipal service charge.
The additional $3 per month will be added to the current service charge, making the total bill $15 for each Mannington resident.
The breakdown of the charge will be:
• $4.50 to the fire department.
• $2.50 to street lighting.
• $3 to the bridge replacement.
• $5 split between the police and street departments.
Michele Fluharty, Mannington city clerk, said the fire department is guaranteed at least $54,000 annually, with the balance of fees collected going to the police and street departments as needed.
