Handful have filed for county positions

FAIRMONT — The filing period for candidates seeking office in the 2014 primary election started Monday, and will go through midnight Jan. 25.

While candidates for statewide, multi-county and legislative offices file with the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office, anyone wanting to file for a position that will only be on Marion County’s ballot just has to go down to the Marion County Courthouse in Fairmont, and stop by the Marion County clerk’s election office.

So far, a few have filed their papers and paid their fees.

The Marion County Democrat and Republican Executive Committees each has one male and female member for each of the county’s 16 districts. These executive committee members help find poll workers.

For the Marion County Republican Executive Committee, Phil Reed Sr. has filed for the Grant 1 district, and Andrew Sabak has filed with Fairmont 4. For the Marion County Democrat Executive Committee, Donald Leonard has filed with South Lincoln, and Mark Rankin has filed with the Mannington district.

Current Marion County circuit clerk Rhonda Starn has filed as a Democrat candidate as circuit clerk. Starn replaced Barbara Core when she retired last August. Current White Hall mayor Guy Ward has filed to run as a Republican candidate for circuit clerk.

Burley “Butch” Tennant Jr. has filed for re-election on the Marion County Commission in the Middletown district as a Democrat. So far, no one else has filed for the position.

Don Headley has filed as Conservation District super for Marion County.

Three positions are up in the 2014 election in the Marion County Board of Education: Babette Sims, West Augusta district; Mary “Sis” Murray, Palatine District; and James Saunders, Middletown district. So far, Gail L. Redmond has applied to run for the Middletown district seat.

Filing remains open through midnight Jan. 25. Residents interested in running for office at the county level should bring money to pay the filing fee, and file a certificate of announcement. You can only run for one office. After applying, be sure to file a personal disclosure form with the West Virginia Ethics Commission. It is due 10 days after you file your certificate of announcement. If you decide to withdraw and want to remove your name from the ballot, you must do so by Feb. 11.

The primary election will be held on Tuesday May 13. Polls will open at 6:30 a.m., and close at 7:30 p.m.
