Sheriff's department, ABCA conduct alcohol sting

FAIRMONT — The Marion County Sheriff’s Department and the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration conducted 28 sting operations Wednesday night to crack down on underage sales of alcohol.

Chief Deputy Ralph Wright of the sheriff’s department said of those 28 businesses, 15 sold to underage individuals.

Wright said businesses are required to check identification and verify age before selling any alcoholic beverage. The legal drinking age in West Virginia is 21.

Although Wright declined to give a list of the businesses that sold to underage individuals, he did say many of them were grocery stores and video poker parlors in the county. He said some of them were repeat offenders.
