With nine parks and 18 miles of rail trails, the Marion County Parks and Recreation Commission (MCPARC) provides a lot of recreational opportunities for the citizens of Marion County.
But the agency thinks it can do even better with a little help from the public.
MCPARC is launching a direct-mail fundraiser — its first — with local businesses to raise money for capital development improvements as well as brand new projects.
“We have a lot of things in mind we’d like to do,” said Tony Michalski, MCPARC director.
MCPARC is funded almost entirely through a county tax levy, with some additional state and federal funds through matching grants for the Rails to Trails project, which converts unused rail lines into walking and biking trails. It also generates about a quarter of its budget from fees and rentals at its facilities.
