Pierpont students affected by closures

FSU decision on some programs came as a surprise; better communication sought

FAIRMONT — At the Oct. 18 Fairmont State University Board of Governors meeting, a decision to close the business education, computer science education, family and consumer science and school library media programs was approved.

This decision came as a surprise to Pierpont Community & Technical College students, staff and faculty, however.

“I think it took us all by surprise,” Pierpont Community & Technical College Provost Leslie Lovett said after Tuesday’s Pierpont Board of Governors meeting. “Really none of us were aware of this at Pierpont.”

Pierpont partners with FSU in a 2 + 2 program in which students earn their two-year degree in a program of study at Pierpont and then move on to FSU to complete the four-year degree.

The closure of the FSU programs has greatly impacted the ability for some students to do so.
