On the first day state-law allowed, Marion County’s three delegates filed to run again for their sets in the House’s 50th District.
On Monday, Delegates Mike Caputo, Linda Longstreth and Tim Manchin, all Democrats, filed paperwork with the Secretary of State’s office to run for one of three seats in their party’s primary election on May 13. The top three vote getters in the primary election will go on to face Republican challengers in the Nov. 4 general election.
Caputo, the House Majority Whip, is serving his ninth two-year term in office.
“It is truly humbling to think that I have been elected to this office for nine terms,” he said in a release following the filing Monday.
“Tim, Linda and I have always put the needs of our district first and we hope to continue to serve the good people of Marion County.”
Delegate Manchin, who was named to the position in 2003 and re-elected five times since, was recently elevated to Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.
“Over the last 10 years, our team has worked to achieve tremendous accomplishments for all West Virginians,” Manchin said.
“Now, as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I will be in an even stronger position to represent Marion Countians and continue our goal of making West Virginia an even better place for our children and grandchildren.”
Longstreth is also serving in her fifth chair of the Veterans Affairs Committee and also serves on the Judiciary Committee.
“Through my work as Vice Chair of the House Veterans Affairs Committee and as Chair of the Joint Committee on Children and Families, I have learned a great deal about the many ways the Legislature is able to positively affect individuals in need,” Longstreth said.
“I look forward to continuing those efforts and to working with Mike and Tim on behalf of Marion County.”
The filing period will run through midnight Saturday, Jan. 25.
According to a search on the Secretary of States website, the three are the only ones to file for the 50th District House election so far, though others have filed precandidacy paperwork in the past few months.
