FAIRMONT — Mascots and others from around the area are getting in shape to see who’s the fastest.

Pierpont Community & Technical College is holding its third annual Pierpont Veterans 5K run and two-mile walk on Thursday. But this year they’ve adding something special.

Ron Weist, race director, said for the first time they are having a Mascot Invitational before the event.

“We’ve invited mascots from all area schools, organizations and businesses to join us for a 100-yard dash,” he said. “We anticipate it to be a lot of fun for everyone.”

The invitational was inspired by the newly named Pierpont mascot, Montgomery the Lion.

“We wanted to do something fun with that,” Weist said.

Weist said as of Tuesday, confirmed mascots that will be participating include Pierpont’s Montgomery the Lion, Times West Virginian’s Scoop, Marion County Public Library’s Marion the Libearian, East Fairmont’s Bee, Liberty Tax’s Statue of Liberty, Little Caesar’s guitar player and Subway’s mascot.

“There are a few others that I anticipate having but just haven’t been given the final confirmation yet,” Weist said.

The Mascot Invitational will take place after the Kids K and before the 5K run and two-mile walk. Weist said they hope to continue to do the invitational each year.

“It’s something that’s going to be very exciting,” he said. “We think it’s something that will very quickly become a fan favorite.”
