Fairview students compete in history bowl

FAIRMONT — Two teams of eight students from Fairview Middle School recently showcased their knowledge and claimed honors at the West Virginia History Bowl.

The team of Becky Luketic, Breanna Lewis, Brett Mays and Austin Composky placed second overall in the state competition in Charleston on Tuesday, while the team of Devony Workman, Lincoln Opyoke, Tayler Pope and Eden Toothman placed fourth.

“They were thrilled,” said Angel Cannon, a social studies teacher at Fairview Middle who coaches the History Bowl teams along with English teacher Rhonda Dean.

The teams advanced to the state competition after placing in the top two in the regional tournament at Notre Dame High School in February. In Charleston, the students competed against the 24 best teams from across the state.

Cannon said the students had been preparing for the competition since last summer, so they went into the competition with a combination of excitement and nerves.

“They were nervous but confident because they put countless hours into studying,” Cannon said.

Each member of the second-place team received $250, while members of the fourth-place team received $50 each for their accomplishments.
