One lane of Third Street Bridge to be closed for more than three months

FAIRMONT — Beginning today, one lane of the Third Street Bridge will be closed for more than three months while the bridge is undergoing a much-needed and overdue cleaning and painting job.

The bridge will remain open to two-way traffic, and the sidewalk on the south side of the bridge will remain open.

“This is just a typical cleaning and painting job,” said Jason Nelson, Division of Highways District Four construction engineer.

The exposed steel members of the bridge will be blast-cleaned to remove old paint and coatings, he said. Then new paint will be applied.

The north side lane (the right hand turning lane onto Fairmont Avenue on the west side) will be closed, giving space for the cleaning and painting equipment.

“We don’t expect any problems. There is enough room there to turn right onto Fairmont Avenue,” he said.

“We recommend people use the Jefferson Street Bridge as an alternate route to alleviate traffic congestion.”

The David Morgan Bridge is a steel girder bridge that opened in 1979. It is 1,104 feet long and 46.5 feet wide.

It was due to be spruced up, Nelson said.
