The Clarksburg Street Bridge in Mannington will soon have a new name.
During the May 6 meeting, council voted to rename the bridge the Historic Southside Bridge in honor of Samuel Nelson “Doc” and Florence Elliott.
Randy Elliott, the couple’s grandson, proposed the names to council in January. Later, Mannington resident Charlie Cobb suggested the name Historic Southside Bridge.
In Elliott’s January proposal, he told council his grandparents’ living legacy to the community is through the family they raised. His grandparents lived in Mannington and raised 12 children.
“Many businesses opened and operated in Mannington by that family,” Elliott told council at the time. “The Mannington Food Pantry, Clothes Closet and Backpacks for Kids are just a few of these areas where Doc and Florence’s legacy survives.”
Councilwoman Rana Taylor said the name was voted in because they wanted to keep the historical significance with the bridge.
“Both the bridges are on the Historical Registry as the Twin Bridges,” she said.
Taylor said the council was happy to honor the Elliotts because of the influence they had on the community.
“The Elliotts have done a lot for this town by establishing businesses, and a lot of the town is based on them,” she said. “And that’s something to be honored.”
