In a matter of months, Fairmont State University head men’s basketball coach Jerrod Calhoun and his coaching staff have turned around an athletic program that previously was under the radar.
Throughout the 2011-2012 season, the men’s basketball team won a total of eight games. During the 2012-2013 season, with Calhoun at the helm, the team’s number of victories has so far risen to 22 and has resulted in an advancement to the NCAA Tournament, which begins Saturday.
Not only that, but the team’s success also sparked a spike in the level of community interest with crowds nearly tripling and reaching as many as 3,800 people at a single home game.
After being hired in April 2012, Calhoun didn’t have much time to transform the program, but that’s just what he did.
