Ten leaders and members of the United Mine Workers of America were arrested Tuesday during a march and protest in front of the headquarters of Peabody Energy in St. Louis, Mo.
More than 750 people gathered outside the building to fight for the health care benefits of coal miners and their families. The initial hearing of Patriot Coal Corp.’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization case took place in St. Louis on Tuesday. The UMW was demonstrating its position that Peabody Energy and Arch Coal created Patriot Coal through fraudulent schemes to put these liabilities on Patriot’s shoulders.
UMW President Cecil E. Roberts; Mike Caputo, District 31 international vice president of the UMW, and several other district presidents; and rank-and-file and retired miners were among those arrested for failure to disperse. They were bailed out by the UMW.
