Number of local flu cases declines

Resurgence not expected after season peaked early

FAIRMONT — The cases of influenza that arrived early in time for Christmas seem to be waning by some accounts, but people should continue to wash their hands and use other measures to stay healthy because plenty of viruses are still out and about.

“There are so many viral illnesses going around now,” said Dr. Jaclyn Gabriel, an urgent care physician at MedExpress in Fairmont. “We’re having negative flu tests on viral illness, and we’re still getting a lot of positive influenza A.”

Even though county and state health officials say the official numbers of positive flu cases have started to drop, MedExpress has remained busy with patients exhibiting symptoms that include a severe headache, cough, runny nose and high fever that can exceed 102 degrees Fahrenheit, Gabriel said.
