FAIRMONT — Members of the community are invited to kick off Memorial Day Weekend at the 9th annual Julia Pierpont Day celebration, set for Saturday.

The celebration will be hosted by Pierpont Community & Technical College, the Julia Pierpont Society, the City of Fairmont Historical Landmarks Commission, the Marion County Historical Society and the Woodlawn Cemetery Historic District and will honor Julia Augusta Robertson Pierpont, the wife of Francis Pierpont, who was the governor of the Restored State of Virginia.

After the Civil War, Pierpont led an effort to clean and decorate the graves of Union soldiers at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond Va., which sparked the establishment of National Decoration Day in 1868.
