Teachers, students ‘ready to work for a good school year’

FAIRMONT — Eighteen Marion County schools had their first day of the 2013-14 school year on Monday.

Gary Price, superintendent of schools, said he felt good about the first day of school.

“I think this year is going to be a very good year for us,” he said.

Price said it might be hectic at first for teachers because they have new content standards and a new evaluation system to deal with.

“Regardless, though, they seem to be in a very positive frame of mind and ready to work for a good school year,” he said.

Throughout the day Price and other administrators visited schools in Marion County. He said for the most part it was a quiet first day of school.

“We try to stay away from the schools in the morning because at the elementary schools they’re often registering new students and at the high schools they’re taking care of schedule changes,” Price said. “So we try to stay out of their hair in the mornings. In the afternoon things have calmed down.”

Price said it’s hard to give an estimate on how many students are enrolled for this school year because new students will be enrolling for a few days and preschool and kindergarten classes haven’t yet started.
