Residents mark World Suicide Prevention Day

FAIRMONT — World Suicide Prevention Day was observed around the globe Tuesday, but local residents remembered their lost loved ones by simply releasing a candle.

On Tuesday, Project SLB Foundation and Messages for Hope hosted a gathering at Palatine Park in Fairmont, where those affected by suicide could light a candle for their loved ones.

For Jennifer Powell and Lacey Pitek, World Suicide Prevention Day was tough.

In 2011, Powell and Pitek lost three of their friends to suicide within a five-month span.

“Two of them were three days apart,” Powell said. “They were my best friends.”
