Mannington officials have approved the final reading of a water transportation fee for the Downs District despite opposition from residents.
During Monday’s meeting, council members approved the second reading of an ordinance for a water transportation fee for the Downs District. The area gets its water through Fairmont but is using Mannington’s water lines, tanks and meters.
The ordinance amends the water rates for a transportation fee to Downs Public Service District, a resale customer of the City of Mannington.
The meeting also included a public hearing for the ordinance, and two Downs residents spoke out against the ordinance and asked council to table it.
Michele Fluharty, city clerk, told the residents that council was told by the PSD to move forward with the ordinance after they received no response from the Downs attorney.
Mannington Mayor Bob Garcia said Mannington had sent Downs two letters.
The residents wanted to protest the ordinance, but Fluharty told them they must do that through the PSD.
