EFHS marks 20th year

School on Airport Road opened in September 1993

FAIRMONT — Activities are scheduled throughout the school year as the “new” East Fairmont High School celebrates its 20th anniversary.

When Tom Dragich took on the role of principal of EFHS in January 1991, the school was in its former home off Morgantown Avenue, where East Fairmont Junior High School is now located.

“I was very humbled to have had that opportunity, and it was made a lot easier by tremendous faculty who really cared about the students,” he said.

He said the students and staff were in close quarters, but everybody knew each other. Dragich was there to experience the high school’s move to its new building on Airport Road, which opened in September 1993.

He remembers how the student body was outstanding and was looking forward to their new home.

“The people in the community were just as enthusiastic about the move and very thankful to have the opportunity to have a new facility for the students,” he said.

Many traditions had been established at the old school over the years, and EFHS had to get used to its new, much larger building and start new traditions, Dragich said.

The alumni donated trees and bushes, and many community volunteers helped during the relocation and with the landscaping work, he said. Former students continued to donate trees and memorials for family members in the years that followed.
