Lost Purple Heart returned to recipient’s family

Military award found in garbage can in Georgia belonged to brother of Barrackville resident

FAIRMONT — A Purple Heart that was once thought to be lost has been placed in the hands of its rightful owner.

A presentation was held Friday morning at VFW Post 748 in Fairmont to deliver the military decoration to Lois Jane Moore of Barrackville. Moore is the sole remaining relative of Luthern Sullivan, who was awarded the Purple Heart in 1945 after being killed during his service in World War II.

Moore said she remembers when her mother had the Purple Heart hanging on the wall in their home next to her brother’s picture.

“It’s wonderful,” Moore said. “I never thought I’d see it again.”

Bill Jervis, a doctor from Georgia, said one of his employees found the Purple Heart, awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S. who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy, in a garbage can about four months ago and brought it to his attention.

“She said, ‘What is it? Is it worth anything?’” Jervis said. “I said, ‘It’s a Purple Heart. It’s not worth anything to you or to me, but it’s worth something to some family member out there somewhere in this country and they’d like to have it in their possession.’”
