Deadline for Fairmont City Council seat is Friday

To fill District 2 vacancy created by Blosser’s resignation

FAIRMONT — The City of Fairmont is accepting applications for the District 2 Fairmont City Council seat through noon Friday.

The city began accepting applications Tuesday, April 22. Former councilman Travis Blosser resigned that Monday, citing other commitments. Blosser is a full-time student and has also started working as assistant city manager for the City of Shinnston in Harrison County.

Blosser, whose term began Jan. 1, 2013, officially announced his intention to resign at the April 8 city council meeting.

“I’ve decided to step aside and allow someone to replace me that will give this seat and council the dedication its residents deserve and need,” Blosser said that night.

Applications are open to qualified voters who reside within the second district. District 2 includes Morgantown Avenue, the Suncrest Boulevard area and the Hoult Road area, and runs from Alta Vista Avenue to Morgantown Avenue, including Kentucky Avenue, Delaware Avenue, Maryland Avenue and East Park Avenue. Council members must reside within the district they represent throughout their term in office.

City clerk Janet Keller said anyone who is interested but is unsure whether or not they reside within the district should call her office at 304-366-6211, ext. 329.

The Fairmont City Council must appoint a candidate to fill the District 2 seat within 30 days of Blosser’s resignation. If it is unable to do so, the city will be required to hold a special election.

Council will review applications and interview applicants at a special meeting at 5 p.m. May 14, directly preceding the Fairmont City Council meeting that day, which will be held at 7 p.m. The newly appointed city council member will begin work that evening.

The term for the seat will run for the period remaining of Blosser’s term, from May 14 to Dec. 31 of this year. After that, the seat will go to whoever wins in this November’s general election. The filing period for the November election runs from July 7 to Aug. 6.

Fairmont City Council is the policy-making body for the city. Council holds two regular meetings per month on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the Public Safety Building. Council must also attend occasional additional work sessions and special meetings.

Fairmont City Council members are paid $50 per regularly scheduled council meeting. After the general election is held and new members are selected to sit on council, starting Jan. 1, 2015, members will receive a pay increase to $200 per regularly scheduled meeting. This is the first pay increase for city council members in 38 years.

Any interested applicants have until Friday at noon to submit letters of intent, resumes or both to Keller’s office on the third floor of the J. Harper Meredith Building at 200 Jackson St. in downtown Fairmont.
