Exercising and eating a good diet has many benefits.
Kellie Snyder, a personal trainer at Fairmont General Hospital’s HealthPlus, said if exercising is consistent, it can lead to a longer, healthier life.
“By exercising, you reduce the chances of having any kind of heart-related diseases,” she said.
Snyder said people of any age can exercise and it gives people more energy, strength and stamina.
“As you grow older, everyday activities become harder and harder,” she said. “So building up that strength helps make everyday activities a lot easier.”
Posture is another area that can benefit from exercising. Snyder said HealthPlus has a posture assessment that clients can take advantage of.
“We help strengthen and critique weak muscles and stretch to get their posture back in line,” she said.
Snyder said men and women on average start to have decreased bone mass at the age of 35. Exercising and lifting can help reduce the loss of bone mass.
“It can help reduce any kind of arthritis, and in some cases can reverse it,” Snyder said.
Other benefits include improved brain function and mood.
“When you’re working out you release chemicals in your brain,” Snyder said. “That’s going to eliminate that depressed feeling, stress or anger.”
Snyder said people who do aerobic exercises are more likely to not be sick often because it creates more blood flow.
