Former FSU football player killed in Wheeling

Police searching for Darrian Cordell as person of interest in Bakare’s death

FAIRMONT — A former Fairmont State University football player was killed Friday night in Wheeling.

Omoniyi Bakare, 22, was shot inside a black Dodge Avenger around 11:30 p.m. Friday on National Road, according to news reports. Police said Bakare emerged from a window on the driver’s side of the car and rolled to the curb while the vehicle was still moving.

When officers arrived, medics were trying to resuscitate Bakare, according to news reports. Bakare died en route to a hospital in the Wheeling area.

Police are searching for a person of interest in the shooting. Investigators believe Darrian Tyrone Cordell, aka “Dube,” 20, of Columbus, Ohio, may have crucial information related to the shooting.

Cordell is wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service and Columbus Police on charges of drug trafficking and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Alex Neville, supervisory deputy U.S. marshal, said no warrant has been issued by Wheeling Police for Cordell’s arrest. However, an arrest warrant has been issued from Ohio by the marshals service.
