Last year in West Virginia, more than 14,000 cases were reported among elderly or disabled adults.
There are probably more that were not reported.
Fairmont proclaimed Friday as “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day,” as representatives from the Adult Protective Services, DHHR, talked about the problem with seniors at the Marion County Senior Center.
“Elders are abused financially and physically,” said Debbie Harvey, director of the center. “We need to make people more aware about who to contact to stop the abuse.”
She said anyone suspecting a senior or disabled adult is being abused should call the center at 304-366-8779 or the APS 24-hotline, 1-800-352-6513.
