Riverfront offers ‘endless’ opportunities

County commissioners offer details of proposed redevelopment project

FAIRMONT — The proposed riverfront park at Palatine Park is ambitious but realistic.

Phase One of the project is already under way, Randy Elliott, president of the Marion County Commission, said at the Wednesday meeting.

Phase One goes from the Bauer Building/Election Center to the site of the former Low Level Bridge. Once developed, that section will include picnic tables, restrooms, parking, a walking trail, pavilions, water garden, boat docks and ramps, and maybe even a gazebo for weddings, he said.

“We are on it already. Dirt has been moved. Trees have been cut,” he said.

Don’t compare this project to the ill-fated Volcano Island Indoor Waterpark Resort, commissioners said.
