Volunteers hope to ‘Make Marion County Shine’

Aug. 10 event to focus on path from I-79 to FSU

FAIRMONT — In just a few weeks, school starts back at Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College, and Jackie Fitch, organizer of the “Make Marion County Shine” and other, regular clean-up events, wants the city to look nice for returning students.

It’s an uphill struggle.

“There’s a lot of things we’ve seen that could be avoided and could be cleaned up,” Fitch said. “People need to be aware of these things.”

According to the West Virginia Department of Transportation, the state spends more than $1 million each year cleaning up litter along its highways. That’s not counting the hundreds, if not thousands, of hours put in by volunteers to keep the streets clean.
