Fairmont riverfront development high priority, but city and county have issues to resolve

FAIRMONT — Nearly a month after unveiling a concept plan for riverfront development near Palatine Park, the Marion County Commission and Development Authority are eager to continue moving forward.

Upon purchasing property from CSX Transportation Inc., the county has made progress on the first phase of the project. That phase extends from the Bauer Building/Election Center to the site of the former Low Level Bridge and would include clearing out space for walking trails and adding restrooms, fishing docks, boat docks and ramps, picnic tables, parking, pavilions, a water garden and maybe even a gazebo for weddings.

But in order to extend the redevelopment beyond that, the county needs coop­eration from the city.
