With the state deadline for towns to submit coming up soon, budgets are on many a small town’s mind. Barrackville is no different.
The Barrackville Town Council met Thursday evening to discuss a preliminary budget with citizens before they have to submit it to Charleston on March 28.
“To be quite honest with you, the town has very little money,” said treasurer David Tonkin, who has been working to prepare a tentative budget. “We’re projecting an income of 170 some thousand dollars,” he said, which when you think about all the services the town has to provide, doesn’t go a long way.
“When you pay police officers and try to take care of the town and keep the streets cleaned,” he said, there’s not a lot left over. “Basically, our money goes three places ... the maintenance department, the police department and town hall.”
The Barrackville Volunteer Fire Department also gets money from the town, but Tonkin said that money goes straight there, not into a town fund.
“We’re open to any input or concerns that you have. If there’s any questions that need to be answered, we’ll try to answer those questions,” he said.
Mayor Roy Meeks said it’s a big balancing act to make sure things get funded and everyone’s happy.
“I’ll be one to admit that coming into this job, I figured there was a little more money the town had than there actual is. Previous councils did a good job managing and taking care of Barrackville,” he said.
