Michael Garrett joins Pleasant Valley Council

FAIRMONT — The Pleasant Valley City Council has seven members again.

The council voted Wednesday evening at its monthly meeting to appoint Michael Garrett to fill the unexpired term of Councilwoman Peggy Garrett, who passed away last month after a long bout with cancer.

“He came highly recommended,” said Mayor Barbara Metcalfe, and as Peggy Garrett’s son she believes he’ll do well in finishing his mother’s term.

The council also approved its 2013-14 budget, which must be submitted to the state by March 28.

“Our budget is strong,” Metcalfe said. “We were able to give a few raises,” she noted, and it’s “definitely balanced.”

One area she noted is getting attention in the budget is the town’s playground and ballfield, which has been in development for quite some time now. Located in Kingmont near the city building, council has been working with the Marion County Parks and Recreation Commission (MCPARC) to develop the area into a full-fledged baseball field and modern playground.

“We’re going to try to get bids for playground equipment,” Metcalfe said, and MCPARC has started work on improvements to the field. Baseball practice should be able to start soon, she said.
