FAIRMONT — The fitness center at the Fairmont General Hospital HealthPlex has a new name — HealthPlus Fitness Center — and other changes already have taken place, with more on the way.

The changes began when the five-year contract Fairmont General had with HealthPlex Associates, which formerly had managed the fitness center, was set to expire, hospital chief financial officer Dan Honerbrink said.

“We went into contract negotiations back in September and couldn’t reach an agreement we both could live with,” Honerbrink said. “So we did an RFP (request for proposals) for national and regional companies to manage our fitness center.”

The one regional company that applied — Pro Performance Rx in Morgantown — won the bid and took over Jan. 1.

“They already have made dramatic improvements in operating hours and internal operations,” Honerbrink said. “They have beefed up trainer staff, improved equipment and initiated several new wellness programs. So far, we’ve been very happy with them.”

The fitness center now is open until 10 p.m. on weekdays and also opens earlier on Saturday.

Robert Dunlevy, general manager of Pro Performance Rx, said the fitness center is open from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

“We think it’s a great facility down there,” Dunlevy said. “Fairmont General and HealthPlus Fitness Center have a lot to offer Marion County. We were happy to be able to step in.”
