State won’t see 17-year cicadas this summer

W.Va. won’t see major ‘emergence’ until 2016

FAIRMONT — Hardly a year goes by where you don’t hear the high-pitched buzz of cicadas over the other sounds of summer.

Many states across the country will be experiencing that sound times a thousand, as the 17-year cicadas return from their dormancy to take to the trees and lay their eggs for the next big event. Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia will see a major “emergence” this year.

But despite reports to the contrary, West Virginia will not see the swarm this year, according to experts at the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
