FAIRMONT — A 21-year-old woman is in stable condition at a local hospital after being the victim of a hit-and-run accident Thursday night in Fairmont.

Fairmont City Police are investigating the incident, which took place shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday on the 500 block of East Park Avenue.

“The female was struck in the roadway by an unknown individual operating a truck or SUV,” said Det. Adrian Hayhurst of the Fairmont police department.

“The driver who struck her did not stop or render aid.”

The woman, whose name has not been released, was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, where she is in stable condition.

“The suspect vehicle was traveling east, out of town,” he said.

“She was crossing the street in the turn before you get to Wright Dawgs. The area was not well lit.”

There are no eyewitnesses to the accident at this point, Hayhurst said.

Police are surmising the make of the vehicle because of the damage they believe it sustained.

“It did sustain minor front-end damage due to the collision, including a broken bug shield and grill,” he said.

“We are currently processing other evidence to obtain a complete vehicle description.”

The woman’s shoes and pocketbook were left behind after she was taken away by ambulance to the hospital.

Hayhurst said he isn’t sure who discovered the victim.

“A concerned person called it in.”

Crossing an unlit street at night can be a risky endeavor.

“You should definitely not cross in a curve,” he advised.

“You need to see a little bit away to make it safely across.”

He said the rain and gloomy weather could have impaired visibility on the already dark street.

West Virginia State Police, the Marion County Rescue Squad and the Fairmont Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Hayhurst is asking that anyone who witnessed the collision will call him at 304-366-2217 or send an anonymous email to
