Fairmont General Hospital is making an effort to increase the community’s knowledge of diabetes.
On Thursday, Nov. 14, FGH will offer a free diabetic-education class for anyone who is looking to learn more.
“Anyone in the community can attend,” Kaitlin Mock, a clinical dietitian at FGH, said. “It doesn’t just affect people with diabetes. It also affects family, friends and anyone who helps care for people with diabetes.”
According to Mock, there are few resources in the area that offer information about diabetes, so FGH wanted to fulfill that need.
“There aren’t a lot of diabetes classes around here, and a lot of times only certain insurance companies cover the classes that are offered,” Mock said. “A lot of people are diagnosed with diabetes but not given any guidance.”
But with the free class offered through FGH, Mock hopes that will change.
The first class was held in October, and Mock said it was well received.
“A lot of people walked away with extra knowledge they didn’t have going into the class,” she said.
In the future, classes are expected to be offered on a bi-monthly basis.
The next class, which is held in the Hamilton Conference Room at FGH, begins at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, and is expected to last about two hours, Mock said.
According to Mock, a certified diabetes educator will teach the class.
“She will discuss the different aspects of diabetes and how to manage the complications,” she said.
In addition, Mock said the class is very interactive and those who attend have several opportunities to engage in conversation.
“The last class felt like it was a good environment to speak up and ask questions they had,” Mock said.
Through the class, Mock hopes people with diabetes will be able to better manage their disease.
“Our goal is to provide community members with an opportunity to learn more about this disease and how to keep their diabetes under control,” she said.
