Teachers prepare students but not ‘teaching to the test’

FAIRMONT — The end of the school year brings with it excitement for warm summer days and a hiatus from homework and deadlines.

But, first, students must conquer one final obstacle — an end-of-the-year assessment that tests the knowledge and skills they have been learned throughout the year.

The thought of enduring several days of extensive testing can sometimes invoke feelings of nervousness and anxiety, but Amy Carpenter, an English teacher at North Marion High School, said students have been preparing for the test since the moment they stepped foot in their classrooms in August.
