Free Comic Book Day can encourage kids to read

FAIRMONT — Walk into the Marion County Public Library today and you’ll be greeted by the usual smiling faces — and one big, green bruiser.

The giant balloon superhero was installed in celebration of Free Comic Book Day, and the library and Comics Paradise Plus have put together a variety of activities to encourage kids to read new things, provide families with material they can enjoy together and help the community at large.

Christian Cox, youth services librarian, said the event is celebrated yearly across the country, as major comic book publishers such as Marvel, DC and Dark Horse put out free comic books aimed at all ages.
