Police: Unidentified man shoots himself at Morris Park, drives to Fairmont General

FAIRMONT — An unidentified man apparently shot himself around noon Thursday at Morris Park after driving himself to the park just off Pleasant Valley Road, according to West Virginian State Police.

Police say the victim “received an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound” shortly after arriving at the park.

The man then drove himself to Fairmont General Hospital, where he was treated for unknown injuries, police said.

Earlier media reports said the victim had been transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Police said the weapon used in the incident may still be at the park but has not been recovered. Witnesses said that someone may have picked it up.

There is no further information on the victim’s condition, type or extent of wounds, or type of gun used.

Morris Park was closed indefinitely after the shooting.

Anyone with information about the location of the weapon, or any information about the incident, is asked to contact Cpl. J.A. McDougal at the Fairmont Detachment of the West Virginia State Police, 304-367-2701.

West Virginia State Police is the leading investigating agency. Members of the Fairmont City Police Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI assisted in the investigation.
