Mental exam ordered for man charged in quadruple murder

FAIRMONT — The man charged with the July 26 first-degree murders of four men in Clarksburg has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Sidney Arthur Muller, 27, is charged with the shooting deaths of Todd Amos, 29, and Christopher Hart, 27, both of Clarksburg, and Fred Swiger, 70, and Freddy Swiger, 47, a father and son newspaper delivery team with more than 30 years at a local paper.

Muller appeared before Harrison Chief Judge James Matish in Clarksburg on Tuesday for a mental competency hearing.

Public defender Wiley Newbold, one of three attorneys representing Muller, told Matish that Muller suffers from four of the five symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

He said the defendant is a regular patient at the local Veterans Affairs Hospital, where records reportedly indicate he has a history of mental illness and is being treated for PTSD with several prescription drugs.

He also told Judge Matish that Muller receives a disability check.

Matish ordered that Muller undergo a mental evaluation by Dr. Bobby Miller, based in Huntington, at North Central Regional Jail.

Newbold did not return telephone calls for comment.
