Magician teaches Fairview kids to ‘be alert to bullies’

FAIRVIEW — Getting a message across to a group of Fairview Elementary students seemed to be an easy task for comic-magician extraordinaire Steve Haberman last Wednesday.

After seven years of working in his company Haberman Magic, he has found a knack for entertaining his audience through comical magic tricks while also teaching them something.

In this case, he was teaching students to “be alert to bullies.”

“I would say I trick them into learning,” Haberman said after his presentation last week at the Fairview Fire Hall. “The kids were a great audience.”

Sponsored by the school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), the event was timely for Fairview. Last Monday, the student body and staff dressed in blue T-shirts to recognize “World Stomp Out Bullying Day.”

First bringing an explosion of laughter into the room through the tricks he had up his sleeves, Haberman toned down the atmosphere by asking a few questions. The “yes” and “no” questions were aimed at getting students to determine whether they may have participated in bullying themselves.

“If you answered yes to any of those, you could be a bully,” he said.
