Mileto to step down as FSHS football coach

Next week's BOE agenda lists resignation as action item

FAIRMONT — Fairmont Senior's football program is looking for new leadership.

Head coach Jared Mileto has resigned after three seasons, as listed in the Marion County Board of Education agenda dated for Monday, Jan. 21.

A longtime Fairmont Senior assistant, Mileto compiled a 17-14 record with the Polar Bears, including a Class AAA playoff appearance during his first season in 2010.

The Polar Bears haven't had that winning feeling since, going 5-5 and missing the postseason in each of the past two years.

With the move down to Class AA last fall, there was optimism 2012 might be different. However, injuries to key skill players and three straight losses to Elkins, University and Frankfort midseason put a serious dent in the team's playoff hopes. Fairmont Senior finished strong, though, winning three of four to close the year and extending its win streak over crosstown rival East Fairmont in the season finale.

Mileto, a North Marion graduate, spent nine years as an FSHS assistant before replacing J.L. Abbott as head coach in April 2010.
