‘War is scary’

Retired Judge Fox: ‘It’s 95 percent boredom and 5 percent terror’

FAIRMONT — Jan. 31, 1969.

“It was just like any other day,” said the Honorable Fred L. Fox II, retired Marion County circuit judge.

He had been transferred from JAG to the infantry in the Marine Corps.

He loved the law but felt he owed it to himself to find out what war was really like.

He was about to find out.

He’d been in Vietnam for about 11 months and just received orders to ship out for Okinawa.

“I got wounded at 5 a.m. that day,” he said.

They were on a sweep near Dodge City, just south of the DMZ, when a small fire fight broke out. A Medivac was called in to take a wounded soldier out.

“About that time, an explosion went off,” Fox said.
