The weather outside was frightful, but Barrackville citizens still packed the sidewalks Friday evening for their annual “Christmas in Our Town” parade and celebration.
The rain never quite stopped drizzling, but it didn’t do much to stop the good cheer on the streets. DeEtta Hayes, the parade director, credited the small-town spirit for making the entire event a success.
“Every church is involved, all of the school kids, the city council ... the businesses, the bank’s involved, (it’s) the whole town!” she said.
Hayes said that she has been involved in putting the event together since its inception.
“My husband passed away in 2001,” she said, “and I spent that Christmas in sort of a daze.”
As a way of giving back to the community and putting meaning back into the Christmas season, she thought that “Barrackville needs a Christmas parade.”
