FAIRMONT — After months of preparation, the SCIENEERS, a team of home-schooled students from Fairmont, won the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Senior Solutions Challenge State Championship at Fairmont State University on Saturday.

Todd Ensign, program manager of the NASA IV&V Educator Resource Center and the director of the LEGO Tournament, said that each year the NASA IV&V Facility’s Educational Resource Center sponsors and trains 10 first-year teams for the competition.

The SCIENEERS was one of those rookie teams which spent an entire week with staff at NASA learning about the various topics that its would encounter in the FLL competition.

“I’m particularly proud of them,” Ensign said. “The fact that a first-year team took the overall championship is, frankly, an upset.”
