BOE approves all but four transfers

FAIRMONT — In a special meeting Thursday evening, the Marion County Board of Education voted on proposed transfers to realign the workforce of Marion County Schools.

The board had met for almost four hours Monday night, listening to local teachers expressing the need for their current positions and programs.

For the upcoming school year, 29 professional personnel and 51 service personnel received transfer notices from the administration due to realignment for a variety of reasons. One service personnel and five professional personnel requested hearings on their transfers.

To realign the workforce, the board of education looks at the positions that are needed and the positions that exist. Sometimes certain positions that are no longer needed are eliminated, either because of a change in enrollment, class sizes, programs or other reasons.

Employees who have the seniority and certification often take another position within the same school or at another school, replacing a less senior teacher. Transfer hearings are for people who have enough seniority and certification to maintain their employment with the board of education, but the superintendent has recommended that they take a different position for next school year.

The board voted unanimously for all proposed positions to be placed on the 2013-14 transfer list, except for Helena A.Tobrey, grade 6, and Kellee J. Brown, math, both at East Park Elementary, and Diana K. Kincell, Pro-Start, and Kathy L. Lupo, DCT/drafting, both at the Marion County Vo-Tech Center.
