For the Fairmont Post 17 Junior Legion baseball team, there’s no big rush of excitement that comes with facing a new opponent. More than anything, odd as it seems, there’s a feeling of calm during such moments.
“These kids get tried of playing the same teams,” Fairmont coach Mark Kerns said. “It’s nice to see someone else. I think it kind of relaxes them.”
That is good news for Fairmont, as this weekend’s Triple Crown Baseball/Morgantown Marathon Tournament features unknowns from all over. Youth teams from five states — West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and Delaware —and nine age groups, ranging from 9 to 18, are taking part in the annual event.
Post 17 got off to a solid start in Saturday morning’s pool play at North Marion High School. They used a six-run fourth inning to bust open a scoreless game and hung on for a 10-5 victory over the Delaware Diamonds.
The game was called after the top of the sixth because of a mandated two-hour time limit for games. Fairmont continued tournament play Saturday night. Results were unavailable at press time.
