The opening round of the West Virginia District 5 11-12-year-old Pool 2 baseball tournament kicked off at Mary Lou Retton Park Monday with the Fairmont all-stars providing the fireworks.
The Fairmont all-stars took the field against Philippi and never looked back in a 4-inning, 17-2 victory, to make the stars 1-0 in pool play.
“We have a great league with great coaches that prepare these guys over the course of the regular season,” Fairmont manager Jaimie Fitch said. “All we have to do is plug in the lineup.”
Fairmont exploded for 9 first-inning run and added eight more in the second to put the game away.
Shea Fitch earned the win, throwing two innings and giving up two runs. Travis Gordon came in and finished the final two innings of the game for Fairmont, allowing only two hits.
“Shea was nervous,” Jaimie Fitch said. “He struck out the side in the first and then got into a little trouble in the second. We knew Gordon was going to be our No. 2 and we brought him in and he did a nice job. Both of the guys did a good job on the mound tonight.”
The fireworks came courtesy of the bat of Jace Riley who hit a pair of home runs in the game.
