Wood’s four goals carry Bees to victory

Times West Virginian

FAIRMONT As the lone senior on the East Fairmont girls’ soccer team, Jenna Wood has some added responsibility.

“She plays up front and is asked to do a lot,” East coach Brad Mills said.

The high-scoring forward, however, went above the call of duty Saturday afternoon at East-West Stadium, scoring each of the Bees’ goals in a 4-3 victory over visiting Waynesburg (Pa.).

Down 1-0 at the end of the first half, East (2-4-1) eventually tied things up at 2-all. It took a 4-2 lead at one point before holding on for the win. Three of Wood’s goals came on breakaways.

“She took advantage of every mistake (Waynesburg) made,” Mills said of Wood.

But this was a team effort according to Mills. He praised defenders such as freshman Abby Bunner, along with the team’s young reserves.

“The girls are working hard. I think we’re getting better everyday,” Mills said.

The Bees’ junior varsity squad won, 2-1. Hailee Moorehead scored twice, while Emily Hartley assisted on a goal.

East looks to continue the momentum Tuesday at Preston.

West records shutout

CHARLESTON — West Fairmont’s girls continued its defensive dominance Saturday, rolling to a 1-0 victory over Charleston Catholic at Schoembaum Field.

It marked the Polar Bears’ fifth shutout in a row. In six games, West has allowed just one goal.

“It was a good team effort, especially in the second half,” West coach Debbie Cattafesta said. “They all played together.”

Meagan Cremeans netted the game’s lone score, which was assisted by Krissy Bodnovich.

Alex Mascaro added six saves in net for the Polar Bears.

West is back in action Thursday when it visits Brooke.

WELLSBURG — Brooks Nucilli scored two goals, helping West Fairmont’s boys’ soccer team cruise to a 4-0 victory over host Brooke Saturday.

Nucilli scored on a penalty kick near the end of the first half, which ended with the Polar Bears holding a 2-0 advantage. He added his second goal, the last of the game, late in the second half.

Zack Garrett and Brian Bacza chipped in goals. Nate Kast assisted on Bacza’s tally.

West (5-1) finished with 16 shots on goal to Brooke’s six.

In the junior varsity game, the Polar Bears tied, 3-3. Liam Carney, Tyler Ewing and Michael Garcia scored for West.

West hosts University Tuesday.
