Bees host MHS; Huskies at B-U

By Mike Bowen
Times West Virginian

FAIRMONT Last season’s win over Morgantown was a big step for East Fairmont’s football program.

For starters it snapped a long losing streak to the Mohigans.

In addition to that history-making win, it also proved that the Bees have arrived on the big stage of West Virginia high school football.

Now East will try to repeat that performance tonight when they host Morgantown at 7:30.

The Bees, who’ve struggled so far this season in the second half, will have to put together four quarters against a Mohigan team that will be eager to avenge last year’s loss.

The Mohigans come into the game riding a dominating win over West Fairmont.

East enters off a confidence-building win over Nicholas County.

While the Bees have typically relied on their quarterback’s legs over the past few years, it’s Drew Jenkins that is leading the way on the offense.

Jenkins leads the Bees in rushing and had a pair of receiving touchdowns last week.

One injury of note is safety/running back Mason Bailey.

Bailey came up with an ankle injury after a run early in the second half last week and spent the rest of the game on crutches.

A state wrestling champion, Bailey is a key cog in East’s defense as well as a strong runner on offense.

The schedule has finally given North Marion a break.

After opening the season against three of the better Class AAA teams in the state with University, West Fairmont and Robert C. Byrd, the Huskies travel to Buckhannon tonight to take on the Buccaneers.

The Huskies are trying to snap a 23-game losing streak, and being on the road at Buckhannon won’t be easy.

North, which has been splitting time at quarterback with Cody Morgan and Shaun McCoy, needs to find some offensive rhythm.

Anthony DeMary, who went for over 100 yards in the season opener, hasn’t been close since. He will need a big performance against B-U as will receiver Alex Osborne.

This is a winnable game for the Huskies.

But they’ll also have to limit their mistakes and try to keep Buckhannon’s offense off the field as much as they can.

Both games are scheduled to start tonight at 7:30.
