Wes Tonkery led the way as Class AAA No. 7 Bridgeport pulled out a 42-35 win over No. 10 Parkersburg South in opening round of the playoffs Friday night.
Tonkery ran 23 times for 199 yards and four touchdowns and returned an interception 61 yards for another score as the Indians improved their record to 10-1.
The interception return as the final quarter opened gave Bridgeport a 35-21 lead, but the Patriots rallied to a 35-35 tie. Tonkery then broke the tie with a TD run with 36 seconds remaining in the game.
Alex Sutton ran 17 times for 112 yards and Steve Stout nine times for 51 yards for the Indians, who meet the winner of tonight’s George Washington-Preston game in the second round next Friday or Saturday.
Parkersburg South, 0-10 last season, finished the year 8-3.
