FSHS girls lacrosse edges UHS, 11-7

FAIRMONT — While opponents on the field, Fairmont Senior and University’s girls’ lacrosse teams were in it together on Wednesday night at East-West Stadium.

Before the Polar Bears’ 11-7 win, the squads honored the Seton Hill women’s lacrosse team involved in a deadly bus crash along the Pennsylvania Turnpike last weekend.

One of those players, Morgan Cain, is an FSHS graduate and a current Griffins’ senior standout.

She was in attendance for Wednesday’s game, in which Polar Bears wore ribbons recognizing Cain. The rivals also came together to display a homemade poster and made a circle at midfield, vowing to play this one for Seton Hill.

“It was pretty touching. She broke down seeing it,” FSHS coach Jon Cain said of Morgan once she saw the players’ ribbons. “She tells us a little more each day (about  the accident) but it’s going to take some time. In a couple weeks, they’re going to try and get back as a team and see exactly what they are going to do.”

As for the game, the Polar Bears raced to a 6-2 halftime lead to move to 1-1 on the year.

Ali Sansalone had seven goals to lead FSHS. Gabi Mascaro added two goals and two assists, while Sarah Topardo and Maddie Craig each had one goal.

Isbella Leon added 12 saves in goal during her first start of the season.
