North Marion set for 2013 baseball season

FAIRMONT — Even though North Marion High School is dropping down to Class AA, the team will feature many new faces in the 2013 starting lineup.

The Huskies will be without their all-everything in Brent Osborne, who hit nearly .495 while drilling six home runs. Osborne did nearly everything but sell popcorn during the Huskies’ seventh inning stretch.

“I don’t think any (youngster) will take over and do what (Osborne) did last year. There’s always down the road or next year,” North Marion head coach Vic Seccuro said.

Not only did North lose Osborne, but the team also lost its starting catcher in Austin Bland; Jake Price; Ryan Harbert; Zach Jett; and Troy Shuck.

“We lose that kind of talent, that’s definitely a big blow to your team,” Seccuro said. “(Bland, Osborne and Shuck) were first team all conference. All the seniors were pretty darn good baseball players. Those are one-third of your team that’s gone. Have to find kids to make up those positions.”

Even though North is in a so-called “rebuilding year,” the team has many positives to look forward to in the start of this season.

The first positive is the youngsters who set the world on fire as freshmen. Keegun McCullough, Skyler Brooks, Ryan Jolliffe and Christian Tomana all came onto the high school scene while leaving a mark early.

McCullough hit .425 as a freshman, joining the illustrious .400 club early. Jolliffe tallied a .389 batting average.
